These are one of the 1st earrings we fell in love with & started making in South Africa before the birth of African Love Letter. They are traditional MAASAI earrings, popular in the Southern Part of Africa & originally designed by the Maasai tribe in Kenya & Tanzania, though we 1st learned of them from Zulu traditional weddings & ceremonies. This design is typical to the MAASAI cultural beadwork with the circular shape, use of wires & bright colors that each represent something to the culture.
The use of the cowrie shell however is popular to Senegal where cowrie shells are used to throw "bones" in order to receive messages & guidance from the ancestors…
We could write a whole thesis about why these earrings are not only stunning but also so Interesting in how they are made, worn & celebrated in so many different African cultures.
